Associate Director Pre-Health Professions Advisor Open to: Internal Applicants Only, Internal and External Applicants Full-Time or Part-Time Status: Full-Time, 12 months Staff Job Type: Salaried/Exempt Position Summary or Faculty Qualifications
The Associate Director, Pre-Health Professions supports SJU students preparing for careers in health professions.
Responsibilities include undergraduate student advising and the coordination of educational/professional programming for all pre-health students.
Working with Health Sciences (HS) Department faculty and reporting to the Dean of School of Health Professions, the pre-health professions advisor manages the undergraduate direct entry pathways and external partnerships for programs in nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and others.
The position requires coordination with a variety of constituents across campus, including the Office of Admissions, Advising Center, Athletics, the Registrar, and others.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide HS program information to prospective and current student
Work collaboratively with Admissions, the Career Center, and Athletics to recruit interested students
Facilitate workshops about health professional program opportunities
Manage recruitment events such as open houses and summer orientation and coordinate campus visits with appropriate program directors
Maintain admission materials, including the HS website
Advise pre-health students on course sequencing, prerequisites, and academic requirements for their intended area of study and develop plans of study
Meet with students interested in change of major to HS, discuss match with career goals, review HS program requirements and courses needed to graduate, and sign change of major forms
Manage the HS direct entry pathways and external partnerships for programs in nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and others
Collaborate with the Advising Center to identify registration dates and prepare for registration by updating the Canvas advising site
Manage issues students encounter with registration, course withdrawals, independent study, and course conflicts
Initiate and supervise a departmental system to track student performance each semester to ensure academic progression standards are met
Manage the academic probation and dismissal process each semester
Assist faculty in scheduling advising sessions and ensure shared and adequate coverage by all faculty members
Perform transfer credit evaluations for students transferring into HS majors
Provide guidance and support to students seeking clinical, volunteer, and leadership experiences and maintain an internship database
Work with students to secure examination preparation support for graduate school applications
Secondary Responsibilities:
Serve as the point of contact for SJU with pre-health online national application systems
Maintain membership and active participation in NAAHP and/or NACADA
Monitor, track, and report success of students entering graduate programs
Maintain a database of pre-health students and alumni
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Some early morning, evening, or weekend hours on occasion
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of three years’ experience in an academic advising capacity in a college or university
Understanding of registration procedures and academic requirements for health professional programs
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and administrators
Demonstrated effectiveness in communicating in oral and written forms
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree
Excel, Canvas, Banner, and DegreeWorks experience
